Can I Use Old TemplateMonster Templates On New ZC Versions?
Hello,
I would like to purchase a template that says it runs "version 1.3.8 (only)", however my Zen Cart runs version 1.5.0. Is this an issue? Will the 1.3.8 template run on my 1.5.0 version of zen cart?
Thank you.
edit: this is the template I would like to buy: http://www.templatemonster.com/zenca...tes/25263.html
Re: Using Old Templates On New Versions
I would suggest searching the forum for "templatemonster" before making your decision on whether or not to purchase the template. As Templatemonster templates are a major pain because they break some front end functionality you would be stuck with the exact look...no tweaking except for what you can get away with in the stylesheet.....want the right column back...not gonna happen.....plus that fact that its a 1.3.8 template you will have hoops to jump through getting it to play nice with 1.5
This particular template would be fairly easy to replicate in 1.5 without paying money for a version that will need work anyway.....
Re: Using Old Templates On New Versions
I see. I will follow your advice.
But how do I style a zen template? I can design, code, and style a regular html document but I couldn't find the html or style sheet for a zen cart template to save my life. Can regular people create them without a dev team? Excuse my noobness.
Lastly, do you have another source for templates that isn't such a pain for breaking front end functionality like Templatemonster? What kind of front end functionality were you referring to anyway?
Thanks.

Thanks.
Over a 100 to choose from.

Most use CSS, which make even further costomaisation a breeze :)

Re: Using Old Templates On New Versions
Thank you for the post, but I meant templates that were already stylized. I don't mind paying. I just a have a time limit that's doesn't allow me to experiment with any style sheets.
Re: Using Old Templates On New Versions
The TM one may be a fixed design, ie the one you linked to, it has a column on the left and 6 new products at the bottom etc. On a normal installation, you could have a right sidebox column, or maybe 8, 10, 12 new products, or featured products etc. On the TM template, the design 'may' be fixed to exactly what you see, but if thats fine for you, and as you can see the TM templates are far more professional looking than the ones suggested above, then thats OK, and as you say if time constraints are an issue then its the best solution.
Re: Using Old Templates On New Versions
@dgent we all know you don't mind TM templates, if they get the job done.....but you missed to point out that while this template might get the job done, its not going to work on a 1.5 install because its a 1.3.8 template and there are a few things that will have to be merged in correctly...such as security tokens for the login page...if the OP doesn't have the skill set for merging it will be a daunting task as a TM template is so different on the inside
Re: Using Old Templates On New Versions
I didnt miss it.
No template he wants to use is going to work on 1.5 unless its designed for it. So out of all the choice of 1.38/39 templates, if youre going to have to modify the security tokens on the login page, you may as well do that on the template you want rather than one you don't.
The other simple option is just run 1.39
and there is this...

Re: Using Old Templates On New Versions
Thank you both for your replies.
Apparently, TM offers a service to convert 1.3.8 templates to 1.5.0; however, I have another question: is there a significant difference between 1.3.8 and 1.3.9? Because my Zen Cart provider sees to teat that as updates that are one in the same..
Re: Using Old Templates On New Versions
Sorry for the double post but I can't find the edit button:
Is there a significant different between 1.3.8 and 1.3.8 (sp1)? Do I need to look for templates running sp1 for it to work with that version?
