Paypal Express works on and off

Curl and ipn test come back OK.

I had SSL enabled to TRUE. I changed it to FALSE and Paypal worked for another couple days.

Now its not working AGAIN.

I cant upgrade to 1.38 in the middle of the season.

Should I install Payflow Pro for PayPal ? Is that a more stable gateway?
