I have set max shipping weight to 8 in configuration shipping. I tested it at 30 pounds and I got all the way to confirm order. I did not want to confirm order and create a sale so I quit at that point. I was expecting a message to popup that said my shopping cart was too heavy. Is that the way it is supposed to work?

The Maximum weight setting is to break down the Maximum weight per box ...
Wh ydo you need to have a Maximum weight per order of 8lbs?
What shipping method(s) are you using?
I am shipping from Italy to usa. Anything under 5 kilos is a flat 128 Euro. I dont want to ship anything over the 128Euro figure. So I just want to charge a flat rate for shipping and stop the order at 4 kilos. follow?
What is the difference between limiting an ordr to 8lbs and me making 2 orders of 8lbs?
nothng. that would be great. they can make as many orders of 8 pounds as they want to. I just dont have a shipping module for italy to usa. Flat works for me and I believe in the KISS principle. I dont want to see an order of 8 pounds and an order for 1 pound and shipping 127 euro times 2.
Can't you just setup Zone Rate or Table Rate to charge for every 8lbs for the US?
I also failed to mention that what I am shipping is somewhat fragile. And I dont want to put all of my eggs in one basket so to speak. I am limiting my liability by keeping the package size smaller and smaller boxes tend to be stronger for reasons defined by the laws of physics.
Giving them the option to spill over 6 ounces into a second order is asking for trouble.

Also you should set the Maximum weight back to 50, so that it does not split the weight into boxes ...
i searched youtube on that whole boxes thing and no one addressed that field. All they had to say was... leave it as default. Not much use as far as videos go. Even a certain Pica video glossed right over it.
I still don't understand the maximum shipping weight thing though. No information out there at all.

The maximum weight is used to divide up the total weight of the order into boxes that do not exceed the maximum weight ...
You want the maximum weight set back to 50lbs so that the total weight is not divided into boxes of less that 8lbs ...
Would be nice if someone could do a quick and dirty 2 min video with examples on youtube. Ive been using ZC since 2007. I have never needed to learn about this aspect of ZC cart until just recently. It sounds like one of those things that if people understood it, they most likely would implement it.
Seems to me that I should be able to set the max shipping weight to 8 and max number of boxes to 1.
Having multiple boxes on one invoice could also raise chargeback issues if one of the boxes was damaged. CC company is like to give back the entire invoice amount for any damages claimed.
