Salemaker sales apply only to the master_categories_id?
I realize that the subject implementation has been around for-ev-er, but what's the reasoning here? It's quite the PITA for a site with a slew of linked products (and categories) to painfully go through those products to reset their master_categories_id to reflect the to-be-on-sale category's.

I never knew of this restriction...changing master_category ids would destroy my shop setup...I even disabled it in Store Manager.
Sounds like a bug to me. If a product is on sale, it's on sale irrespective of it's category location.

Products don't go on sale. Categories do.
If a product is on *special*, it's on special irrespective of its category.

... and if a category is on sale, IMO, the sale should apply to all of its products, whether via master_categories_id or linked.

Agreed.

Check the historical documents to which the public can not easily get to these days. I.e. way back machine or whatever. The reasoning was provided there.

Category 1 has category 2, category 3, and category 4 in it.
Product 1 has a master_categories_id of 2.
Product 1 is linked to category 3.
Product 1 is linked to category 4.
Sale of 20% off on category 2.
Sale of 50% off on category 3.
If product 1 base price is 10, has no attributes, no other discount pricing like a coupon or special, then for what price is it on sale under the proposed premise? 10, 8, 5?
Under the current arrangement/programming, at every location that product 1 is shown it would be 8.

Good point, @mc12345678, I hadn't considered that.
