RCPT TO:<> 501 Syntax error in parameters or arguments
Zen Cart 1.3.8a, smtpauth, Windows 2003, IIS, MailEnable, new install, very few customizations. www.stdtime.com/store.
When some people attempt to order, they get an SMTP error (with no details). The mail server logs show the error below.
RCPT TO:<> 501 Syntax error in parameters or arguments
Evidently, the "to" email address is empty in RCPT TO. But again, this only happens with some people. Most people who order are fine.
All my email options have an email address. Any idea which field is empty?

Bump. Any input on this issue? It looks like it's not supplying the "to" email address during some orders.

Re: RCPT TO:<> 501 Syntax error in parameters or arguments
I can't replicate the unique problem you're experiencing.
Perhaps you have invalid "extra" email address fields set for the admin copies?
Or, if you turn off all your switches to send copies to yourself, does the problem disappear?
What pattern have you seen with the cases which have allegedly failed?
Does the customer actually receive the email?
What's showing in the email archive? (assuming you've turned it on and installed the addon to allow you to view it) Which emails *are* sent vs *not*?
What addons do you have installed?

Thank you, DrByte. I'll keep hunting... :)

As you can see, the rcpt variable is not understood by the smtp server. I can send an email fine from the admin environment and can also send a newsletter fine.
SMTP authentication does NOT seem to be the problem. I believe that the rcpt email is either incomplete or missing, but I can find no errors in my configuration.
Several people have had this problem, but there seems to be do definitive solution.
Thanks,
Marty

Re: RCPT TO:<> 501 Syntax error in parameters or arguments
Tech support at my ISP states that the log shows:
RCPT TO:<>
Which is why the server is not accepting it. The script is passing an empty variable, even though it is set correctly in admin/config

So, in Admin->Configuration->Email Options, what do you have set for the following:
- Email Address (Displayed to Contact you)
- Email Address (Sent FROM)
- Set "Contact Us" Email Dropdown List
NOTE: The Contact-Us dropdown entries MUST follow the prescribed format as described next to the input box. Not following that format will cause the email addressing to break.
And not entering ONLY an email address (ie: [email protected]) in either of the other entries I mentioned will also cause email delivery problems globally.
