unable to assign media collection to product

I've just begun using ZC and thus have the latest version. I created a Media Collection ( a selection of mp3 files ) following the manual step by step. The 'category' drop down box shows the one category I have, namely 'music downloads', but when I try to assign the Media Collection to a product, I get the message ' no product in category'. This is not the case - there are actually seven music-products in this category.

Given that my shop is a dedicated music download store, having working a pre-listening option is essential. I've tried searching the forum, but all I found were instruction identical to the one in the manual, except for this sentence:

9. You will need to set up your product Attributes to actually tie the "real" music clips to your products for "Purchase".

with no further explanation...

The pre-listening function is basically the last thing I need to make my shop fully functional, so I'll be really grateful for help. Thanks.

You have only one category, and there's a quirk (to be fixed in the next version) that prevents the products from listing if you can't choose the category.

Thanks for your help! You have to admit that was not an easy one to figure out by oneself...
