Let's Talk About Arrays

For some reason, the concept of pulling data from a database and placing it in an array escapes me. Isn't it easier to just pull the entire content from a table? Why place it in an array? And how does the array really work? I've been messing with this stuff for a while, and somehow I just don't get it. How about one of you "Totally Zenned" folks giving a tutorial to us "Newbies"?

It's not so much about what I am doing as it is about understanding a concept. I am building a database containing a lot of stuff. Extracting the data is where I have questions. I can extract all of the database content and reference the data, or apparently put it in an array and pull it out of the array. What's the difference? I am trying to understand the concept. This forum doesn't have a place for people to ask extremely basic questions like this.

This forum is more about Zen Cart questions and not about php/mysql conventions.
You are correct in your thought but will bloat code calling each table item and arrays allow all predefined items to be called using one variable
