The principal advantage to having a local test site is that you can try things without worrying about what customers will see, and without the chance of messing up your site with a mistake. Then you can transfer the changes that work to your live site.
Some of these advantages also apply to having a test site in a subfolder of your live site, if your host allows you to have a second database.

No you don't need xampp, nor do you need a test site in a sub folder on your live site. I have neither, although one or the other is probably advisable. I think the main point is not to install or modify anything on your live site unless you're sure it will work, and that you know how to reverse any changes if necessary.

I am wondering if its because i'm on vista, would this be a problem?
A tip for Vista....don't install your local server and Zen Cart under the
Program Files folder on your hard drive. You won't be able to edit the files.

I'm with Glenn. It's helpful to have a test environment. If you create a test
cart on your remote server, follow all security recommendations as you would
    for your live site.

Just a little note here. I run Windows Vista, and TShooters is right.........you CANNOT install xamp (I use Wamp) in the Program files. You MUST install DIRECTLY to "C:\wamp(or xamp)". If you do that, you shouldn't have any problems.

Hope this little note helps somebody.

Just a tip for those having problems downloading the complete zip file, with the download breaking - you might consider to install one of the free Download Manager programmes on your PC. This will enable you to resume broken downloads at the point at which they failed. This will save you time!

Additionally, although it is not necessary, I agree that it IS good to have a local copy of your website running on XAMPP on your PC. The reason for this is that it allows you to test changes you make and see them in action (correcting any errors) before you upload them to the live website.

If you don't have a local copy running under XAMPP and/or don't have a development copy online then all of the changes you make will have to be tested on the live website - breaking it when you get things wrong (as you will).

Some of you having problems downloading, might also try using FireFox with the FireFTP add-on434. I've never had any problems downloading large programs (Like ZC) with FireFTP. If it looses connection, it will resume right where it left off (as long as you don't close it out or shut down) when it re-connects. And, it's Free.

I have no idea what's going on here, and seems like very few others have had this problem, but I'm having it as well. I'm going to try using an alternate extracting program and I'll let you know how that works out. If anyone else has any new advice, please post it or even e-mail me[I'm trying to have this set up by tomorrow morning].

Thanks everyone, and good luck to ya, Emily.
