Hosting stopped site, reason - critical load

hi all.

I use zencart 1.3.8 and when 8-10 guests online then looks like a lot of requests generating and site work really slow, and even hosting company has blocked site because of "critical server load and another services were affected so we blocked your site until you resolve the problem".
Hosting is shared, not vps or dedicated. Is it critical? Why it work so slow when 8-10 users online in shop? It is really needed vps or dedicated? Would not I have same problems with perfomance if I get vps?
Can anyone help me about minimum server requirements, I'm just in process of choosing vps.
Maybe someone know how to optimize zencart to get if working fast.

Contact one of recommended zencart hosts listed at url above...
Their servers are capable of dealing with zencart..you should not be
experiencing problems as you are now with just few visitors visiting
your zencart site

Definitely time to look for another Hoster. No way with 8 - 10 Visitors that your site should cause Server problems and/or your site run slow.

Yes, it's really hosting problem, I think so but it is another hosting I use for my shop and first was really slow. Sure, I understand that zencart must work fine and I don't think that problem inside it cuz I use zen so long time and in different projects.

Part of the problem is the size of your images - your main page is very large when you add up all the images - Optimize them.

Yeah, right, pictures so large but it were larger :) and now optimized. I think that I got bad way because I didn't use small,medium,large options of picture loading and I loaded only one large picture to each product. But version 1.3.8 still support _MED, _LRG options as in last versions?
Do you really think that large size of main page may be reason of my problem? I not sure that 10 users who load pages of 300-500kb in one time can load server on hosting to 10% and more ... Maybe they limited everything on their servers to get more clients, it's possible I think.

But anyway, if I get VPS then will it resolve my current problem? what do you think? VPS is like dedicated but with some limits as I can see on their site.

would sggest using the Image Handler Module rather than redoing all your images by hand
