Redeem Gift Certificate with No Login

I'm working on a site that doesn't require login. I've setup gift certificates, and now I have a questions. Lets say someone gets a gift certificate for $100. When they come to the shop they redeem the gift cert but only apply $50. What happens to the other $50. Is there no way for them to redeem the other $50 if they can't login?

It was my understanding that you had to be logged in before you could redeem it in the first place.

As to the balance how could you keep track of it and to whom it belonged unless you used a login?

You may need to keep the login option for gift vouchers at least

I see problems buying it as well as it is normally released manually and your purchasing customer would not be able to receive it in the first place
