help question how do i get rid of the demo data in my shop?

    Hi all,
this is my very first post, so please be gentle with me!
Here is a quick run down of my knowledge; i am nearly at the end of a book on PHP and MYSQL, I know a bit of HTML and CSS. that is all.
I have manged to install Zen cart with the demo data, everthing is working fine
I have been going through some of the tutorials and doing lots of reading of past posts on customization, ect.

Now my big question, how do i replace the demo data for my my data?
Or do i have to keep the demo data and reinstall zen cart, so i there are to shops? I just can not find this information or i am not looking in the right place.
iI am stuck and don't know how to proceed!

All help is greatly accepted, with thanks.

The easiest way (please, no hooting, MySQL experts) is to go to Catalog - Categories/Products and delete all the existing categories before you start adding your own.

Admin - Catalog - Categories/Products - the same place you'll enter your own products when the time comes. To the right of each category are some buttons - you want the red 'X'.

Idea or Suggestion Re: how do i get rid of the demo data in my shop?

    I get the picture now.
if i wanted to keep the demo data, for further practice, would i need to do a fresh instal but in a different direstory?
    ie
    APPSERV\WWW\CATALOG\DEMO DATA.

    APPSERV\WWW\STORE\MYDATA

    does that sound about right.
so to URL would be; http://localhost/store.

how am i doing, so far? Please correct me if i am wrong.

    A fresh install, yes.

    You mean www.yoursiteaddress.com/store, right?

Make sure you set up a new database for the new installation. If you point it to the old one, you'll overwrite all your work.

If you're going to go that way, it'd make more sense to leave the demo stuff in the existing site and install the new one without the demo products. You can always move it later.

Hi, yes you are correct, my domain/store.
I was installing on my local server.
I created a new database and a new directory for my new install.
Even though i did not instal the demo data, it's still there isn't it?
i had a look in the image folder and all the images for the demo data are there.
Do i just leave them there?

i want to get the site working before uploading to my domain. Am i going about it the right way?

many thanks for your help and guidance.

A much more simple way to do it, especially if you'd like to keep the demo products on hand, for later experimenting, is to:

    1. Make sure your real products and subcategories are not in the same Main category as the demo test products, then:

    2. Change the sort order of each Main category the test products are in, to some ridiculously high number, you're unlikely to ever use for your real product categories (ie. 5000).

    3. If any of those Main categories have a name that you're planning to use for your real product categories alter the name (ie. Software - Test)

    4. Click the green button next to each demo Main category title to disable them: This will disable all the products within that category.

Now, as you're working with your real catalogue, the demo products will always be listed out of the way, at the bottom, so you won't be confused.

When you need to practice with them again, simply re-activate the status button (this time it would be red, and you would click to turn green).
