Default Tax exempt on certain categories

    Hey all,

Do you know of a way where I can set a customer to be tax exempt but only on certain product categories? I sell jewelry making supplies and tools. My California customers with a Tax ID don't need to pay tax on supplies but they need to pay tax on tools as they are the end user. Right now we manually refund them for tax on resell-able stuff, that is a huge pain.

I tried the tax exempt module but as far as I can tell, that makes them tax exempt on everything.

    Any advice? Thanks in advance,
    Lisa

This would really require quite a bit of customization that you may wish to post in the Commercial Help Wanted if you are not into a lot of coding ...

thanks for getting back to me. My husband is a software engineer and could code something up, we were just hoping there was an easier way. Do you have any advice for him before he dives in?
    thanks again,
    Lisa

    Backup lots ...

First concept that comes to mind is build a customers and products tax exempt table to check the products against to override the tax setting ...

    Table: customers_products_tax_exempt
    fields:
    customers_id
    products_id

Only add products the customer is tax exempt from, so on the check, if a record is there, then customer is tax exempt, otherwise charge tax as usual ...

Another way is tax exempt groups ... but that is the premise that there are 10 groups of customers that are tax exempt from the same products within the group ...
