Default Image Handler breaking store on large image resolution upload

I run several stores and it really causes problems (especially now-a-days with higher resolution cameras) that Image Handler "breaks" when you upload an image with too high a resolution. I am sure you guys have run into this.

I did several searches but couldn't find an answer to a work-around (other than resizing manually before uploading) or a newer version of IH that solves this limitiation.

What can be done to fix this issue?

I am having the same issue. It is not the image file size it's the image actual size. We uploaded a Homer Simpson doll to our star collectibles category and the category went completely blank.
Turn Homer listing off and the category and everything in it is visible again. Turn Homer back on and everything goes blank again.

I found that there is a max 2MB setting for image filesize uploads under Config > Max Settings... try changing that and the upload should work. Let me know!

I tried your suggestion with no results.

I believe the problem lies in the image dimensions not the file size. May be there is something wrong with my ih2 installation.

    The image I try to upload is 2048px X 3072px 980kb

If I use irfranview and cut the dimensions in half it will work.

But I thought ih2 was supposed to resize images?

    Am I missing something here?

    thanks!

I've never been able to get a straight answer on this... and have ran into the same problem with this occuring from time to time with high-resolution uploads. Usually high-resolution images mean greater filesize so that's why I suggested upping that setting.

Please let me know bealey (or anyone) why this would happen. I have to suggest using a third-party program to resize before upload but you're right - that kind of is redundant.

Anyone have a solid answer on why IH2 breaks with larger resolution images?

If you upload an unreasonably large image you are asking for trouble and it will make it come up blank.

Folks fuss about having to resize things manually, but there is free software that can do it for you.
My favorite is IrfanView (google it).

It will resize images in batches to a reasonable size. And lots of other amazing stuff too. IrfanView is one of those programs you won't believe is free. Much better than Adobe Bridge for most image management tasks.

    And one more...

Modern cameras have setting for image resolution. You don't have to take all your pictures at huge size.

    kiddo,

I appreciate your input but you did not read my post very clearly. I already mentioned irfranview. I am aware of this.

But my 57 year old father whom lives 300 miles from me is the person whom uses the store and believe me he has enough trouble with using the store as it is. ( He is of the old school analog variety )

I was under the impression that IH2 did the work of resizing images using imagemagick. Wasn't that the point of the module?

Am I missing something here? Thanks

Yes, I see. Forgive me for not reading whole thread, I only viewed the one under New Posts :)

I've wondered about this limitation myself when folks run into it. My only solution (sofar) is not to over-do the image size by using a lower setting on the camera.

The docs for IH2 suggest your input image size should be at or near the size of your Large-Display-Image. It probably is a server (perhaps upload limit or memory limit) that chokes it, but if you have shared server, you may not be able to change such settings.

It is very nice you work out for your Dad. Perhaps you could walk him through turning the camera down a bit.

Again, sorry for not reading older posts before putting foot to mouth :)

It appears that I will have to explain this limitation to him. ( wish me luck ) Hopefully someone will find a solution to this.

Seriously though I thought IH2 resized images for you but I guess what it really does is shrink down an image from it's original size for the small and thumbnail images and doesn't really physically change the original image.
