Admin Categories Display Performance VERY Slow

No products under any of the ~75,000 state, county, city, zipcode categories.

Was very slow (3-5 wall minutes) before I set "Show Category Counts" to false, but completed user display within the default time limit of 60 seconds.

Crashed Admin categories/products display at 60, 120, 240 time limit seconds, but now completes with time limit of 1200 seconds, with a wall time of 15-20 minutes. This kind of performance is something of a disincentive to click the categories/products admin display option.

The only things I've found thusfar in archives is that some folks have traced MySQL and found it was doing a lot of extra processing for no apparent reason. I've run many sql queries that process all top level categories down to the bottom level and all queries complete in 1 to 3 seconds of wall time, so it seems like there much be of a lot of, presumably, unnecessary processing going on. This box is a dual core with 2 gigs of memory so even an in core sort shouldn't take this long...

Before I start going through the code and rewriting things I thought perhaps there's another switch I need to turn on or off.

I'm suffering with fear an anxiety at the thought of adding products...

Any thoughts would be appreciated...
