Default Changing Categories Layout in Side Box

    Hi,

I am in the process of setting up my new site and have been trying to set up my cats in a specific way but cant figure it out. I'm using 1.38a.

Currently my cats look like this in the side box

    >Ink Cartridges

    >Thermal Ribbons

    >Toner Cartridges

and when you click one of these the sub cats are displayed on the main page.

I would like the cats to look like this:-

    Ink Cartridges
    Canon
    HP
    Epson
    etc
    Thermal Ribbons
    Philips
    Sharp
    Toner Cartridges
    Canon
    HP
    Epson
    etc

and then for all sub cats below this to open in main windows when someone clicks one at the side. If that makes sense :-)

If you look at www.cartridgesave.co.uk you will get a better idea of what I mean.

I know I can make a change in admin but that shows all sub cats in the side box if you click on Epson and I don't want them there.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any help.

Sorry-can't edit the above post but www.easyinkz.co.uk would give you a better idea of what I'm looking for.

    Thanks again for any help

This has been discussed before... look for something like limit subcategories.
Hide top category - Skip to subcategories
This one gives the basic code, which can be modified for a number of displays.

You would first need a mod to expand categories (look in Free Addons), so that they would all be displayed; then you can hide the ones you don't want to see.
If you want the example behavior, that is standard and will need no expanded cats mod.

    Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I did have a search through the forum before posting but it's not easy to search for something when you don't know what it's called.

Thanks again though - I`ll have a look at what you have suggested and see if any of it makes sense to me.

    Cheers

    Hi again,

Well I managed to install the Expanded cats mod OK but when I tried to amend the code as per your linked post it all went wrong and site wouldn't load.

I don't mind the top cat showing but I don't want and cats below the second level showing but can't figure it out.

I'll have another look at it later and see if I have suddenly got less stupid.

    Thanks again for the help.

I think my added note about easyinkz.co.uk needed to be more prominent - you don't need an expanded cats mod to get the same functionality as that. It works like a standard categories menu except for the subcat hiding.
I worked out a subcat-group heading system with this store a few months ago - all of the subcats shown in the center listing are equal subs of the selected (sub)category in the sidebox, with headings inserted at specified places.

    Hi

I actually prefer the way the Expanded cats mode keeps all the cats open even if you haven't clicked on a main heading.

Just need to see if I can work out how to stop it showing sub cats after the second level in the sidebox and I would be more than happy but it may as well be written in russia

Thanks for your help and advice though - it was appreciated.

Had a look at the code and have got it displaying what I wanted - just need to try and make it a little nicer now.

    Cheers again for your help.
