Can a fellow developer please explain the anatomy of the order total modules?

I have a new gift cert module to write, but I am having a bit of an issue wrapping my head around it. I did find the wiki page, http://www.zen-cart.com/wiki/index.p..._Total_Classes, but it's empty.
