I had never done an upgrade before, so, just a little scared of doing it on a live store.
Would the new upgrade cause any conflict to many contributions that I have already installed?

Maybe. But only if the files that have changed have been altered by any of those contributions.
Either way, waiting for someone else to do an upgrade doesn't solve that problem for you.
If you're scared of doing it on a live store, do it on a test copy of your store. The official upgrade instructions walk you through all of that. Those are in your /docs/ folder too, as well as in the Tutorials/FAQs section of this site..
