Default Setting Attributes for special costs

I know I making this harder then it should be.

I have certain special order items that need an extra shipping fee associated with them. I wanted to add an attribute, special order.

I added option name "Special Order", made it a radio button.
and tried to attach it with a +3.00 to my item in the attribute control and it keeps saying no attribute attached to this item. I read the faq on the attribute and can not figure out what I am doing wrong. So if some one could help me with this I can hopefully get the rest.

Option names need to have option values associated with them...
Did you also create a option value and associate it with this name?

Ok I got the option named added but it will not check the radio by default. I want this attribute to be none optional, must be attached to each shippment. How can I accomplish this?

When you add this via the attributes controller - check towards the bottom for "Default Attribute to be Marked Selected:" and make it selected/yes

Yes I do have that option selected. Maybe it's not considered the default attribute?

When I click preview in admin it shows this option automatically chosen, wonder if I have a product setting overriding the attribute?
