Remove shipping option from checkout

I need to remove the shipping option from the checkout process. For this particular site there will never be any shipping charges and I need to 'hide' any reference to shipping method/charges/cost. I have seen a post about adding a download attribute to a product, but I really don't want to do that. My guess is I will need to modify code unless there is a way to do this in the admin panel (I haven't found a way yet).

Or is there a way I can skip step 1 of the checkout process and go directly to step 2?

You could mark all of your Products as Virtual and there will be no checkout ...

NOTE: without it you will not have a shipping address if you are shipping ...

Should you need shipping on everything you could mark that 0 weight means Free Shipping and install the Free Shipping freeshipper shipping module ...
