First 3 downloads free

Is there anything in Zen Cart that I can configure to allow new users to download the first 3 items free, then have to pay for any additional items?

Per Order, meaning I buy 3 products for free and everthing else on this given order beyond is normal price?

Or on a forever basis, meaning I buy 1 on Tuesday for free and 2 on Wednesday for free and forever ever after I pay?

Are these physical items or downloads? As in what happens with shipping?

There will be no shipping. All items will be downloadable.

I am assuming you want the first 3 free ...

Is everything the same price? Or do you want the first 3 lowest priced things free?

I know the idea here is that I get 3 things free regardless of how I buy them ... all at once or over time ...

The question is what other constraints are there?

If I buy your most expensive things on Mon, Tues and Wednesday ... vs I buy 7 things ... who are the 3 free things?

You're triggering questions I haven't thought about... that's good.

If someone buys 7 things, let's say that the first 3 lowest priced items are free.

Otherwise, just the first 3 items downloaded will be free.

Okay so now you need a lookup of existing orders to see how many products were purchased ...

If less than 3, you next check the shopping cart and apply a discount, or Free, on the 1 to 3 products that quality as Free based on the lowest priced products in the cart ...

You could write an Order Totals module for this to calculate the discount and only run it if the customer has less than 3 products in the orders_products table ...

And that Order Totals module would calculate the discount based on the lowest priced Products when more than 3, or the remaining free products, are in the shopping cart ...

It would take a bit of customization to do this, but it can be written ...

Or ... give everyone a simple $10.00 off Discount Coupon good on any products ...

Granted your First 3 products Free does sound a bit more fun as you could add to order emails:
You have 2 more Free Products!!
...
You have 1 more Free Product!!

Exploring the Coupon idea, could I simply allow any buyer 3 coupons to apply to their first 3 purchases?

If the prices are all the same, you could make 1 Discount Coupon with 3 uses per customer for a 100% discount ...
