Default Root Folder on web server

Hi I am new to Zen Cart having just installed a test site and will now re-install on new site to go live. Can the installation bundle of folders be uploaded to the root folder of the site i.e. /home/mysite/public_html/ followed by files.

Or... is there a preference to put the bundle of folders into a new folder called 'store' or 'shop' etc.

Also I noticed when I uploaded the install folders on my test site (on the root folder of the site - not in a store or shop folder), there appeared to be duplicates of quite a number of files. Particularly in the templates folders and the language folders.

I am sure there is a good reason for this.

I look forward to hearing from someone.

    Regards.

    MAKE SURE YOU BACKUP!!!!

With cpanel on both servers/machines, you can:

    • zip the old
    • Transfer to the new
    • Unzip to the root
    • Create database backup on old
    • Create database on new with same name as old
    • Restore old database backup to new
    • Change the config files accordingly

    Did I mention BACKUP?

    Thanks for the responses.

I had looked on the tutorials prior to posting and I could not find a definitive answer to my query.

Thanks dbltoe for the list and I agree BACKUP! In the meantime I am going to do a clean install on a new site and my main question is this: can the installation files be safely placed on the root folder of the website ie straight onto the /public_html/ folder of the site I have created.

I seem to be reading on every installation instructions that the contents of the unzipped Zen-Cart folder should be placed in a new folder (optional names like "store" or "shop" or "catalog" etc).

If there is no need to have the files in another folder I would prefer not to.

    Regards

Using root is fine and the method I prefer. Some will insist on redirects, etc, but browsers like FireFox will not redirect without user permission.

    Thanks dbltoe,

    I will proceed accordingly.

I am new to Zen and I am so far impressed with the forum, add ons etc and love the fact that the site is truly open source and makes great use of css. I am looking forward to setting up this next project.

Be sure to search tutorials for override. It's a must read.

    Hi dbltoe,

Just thought I would give you an update. I read a number of articles and posts on the override and boy am I glad I did.

I have my system nearly configured now and although it is a bit of a mission it is worth it in the end.

I use Dreamweaver CS3 for my editing which also serves as a good basis for my backups because I do all changes locally before I ftp the amended pages. It seems to me that most changes can be done useing Dreamweaver rather than the admin/tool/page define pages.

Can you see any disadvantages to using dreamweaver.

Gotta watch out for extraneous code thrown in by the software.
Not as bad as some but be careful.
