Creating sequentially numbered downloads for paper gift certificates ?

Hi all,

I'm trying to figure out how to sell gift vouchers for local businesses i.e. NOT for my site.

I could just post a paper certificate to the customer but that seems a bit last century So I'd like to be able to offer the certificate as a download, however, I will need to provide some sort of "numbering" system so that I can keep track of who has bought what as they will be redeemed OUTSIDE of the control of my store.

So is it possible to create a down-loadable "thing" that can have a unique identifier on it ??

At the moment I haven't committed to any particular route so all ideas are welcome!

Yes this wouyld be possible but will require some custom coding to track and increment the numbering

I'm happy to do the coding but I'd be very grateful for a highlevel roadmap of the key issues ... i.e. what type of product should I create? what "technology" should I use to create the certificate? What are the key attributes that I need to set ...

You could begin with the certificate images included in ZenCart,
some other method???? to print/superimpose a textual number would have to be found/created.
This serialization would be tracked from a table created in db and referenced in the code to pick the next sequence
