Product ID Number - How do you assign one?

I would like to include a Product ID Number (PIN) with each product in my shop. Ive searched the Tutorials/FAQs and the forums, still not sure how to do it.

Is there a place for including PIN?

A PIN could easily be added to the title or description. I want to know if there is a determined place for it before I use this method.

Could you use the product model field? If not you would need to add an extra field to the product table in your database, add it into the product maintenance screens in Admin and then tweak your product_info template. Alternatively you could, as you suggest, include it in the product description.

Kuroi, Thank you for your quick and useful response. I don't have any experience with editing a database. Source code I can handle, if I mess up I can upload a saved copy of the original file like nothing ever happened. How easy is to F-up a database and what precautions can I take to ensure that any changes, damage, I do can be undone.

If its not any trouble, Im sure I can find something on my own, could you also point out some useful guides/tutorials that might help me make the correct adjustments.

Using the product model field was my first thought too. I decided against it because I thought it might confuse our customers. We sell musical instruments and a Guitar with the Model # G00267 might not make much sence.
