Default First time Install OS X

Well I have downloaded xammp and unzipped zencart into the htdoc folder.
WHen I goto the locahost folder in browser I get the first screen of zen cart. I click continue and then hit yes to agree to GNU terms. On the next screen all I get is this error

Deprecated: Function set_magic_quotes_runtime() is deprecated in /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs/rocky/zc_install/includes/application_top.php on line 22

Please let me know what I am doing wrong

Zen Cart v1.3.8a is not compatible with PHP 5.3.0 and newer.
You'll need to use PHP 5.2.x instead ... which might mean you need an older version of XAMPP or optionally MAMP.

A new version of Zen Cart will be released soon for PHP 5.3 compatibility.

I am interested in knowing about this PHP issue. Is it really important what version you use? The box I am doing this on is running Leopard. I should find out what my host requires.

Zen Cart v1.3.8a will work with PHP 4.3.x through 5.2.x.
    I recommend 5.2.x.
