Default Make category unable to add to cart

I promise I looked around first!

Is there a way to make the add to cart button not available in a category (or by individual product - whatever works!)?

I have a store that is an art school and there are drop-in classes that do not need advance payment, so I'd like these classes to show up in the list of classes but they're a pay on on arrival only.

    Thanks for any help.

You might try Gallery Category - it's not bulletproof, but will make designated categories' product listing and product info pages display-only, and I think with prices hidden. I haven't looked at it in years, but it wouldn't be dificult to let prices show if you want.

Is there a way to do this without making a gallery category?

I'd still like to display the product in it's entirety but only have short periods where preorder is available and then close orders down whist those preorders are filled.

    Thanks!

Gallery Category does not change the product's display except to remove the add to cart button and possibly the price. You can have the category with standard function, and switch it to Gallery when you want to cut off online sales.

This sounds perfect, if I can figure out how to keep the price it would be even better!

What about invoking a different PRODUCT TYPE?

I just tried to read up on product types, I think I just died a little on the inside, this is far beyond my skills

But thank you for your input none the less.

Under admin >>> catalog >>> product types

You will see the standard offerings of product types that can be configured in zencart.

    Product Types

    Product - General
    Product - Music
    Document - General
    Document - Product
    Product - Free Shipping

You might be able to achieve what you want by designating those products as either:

    Document - General

    or
    Document - Product.

You can [EDIT] these types to enable or disable "Add to cart"

The first thing to do (in order to TEST this) is to create a NEW category.

After you have created that category, OPEN IT again for EDITING.

Now, you will have an option (at the bottom of the edit screen), to limit the content of that category to a PRODUCT TYPE.

See the input field labelled "Restrict to Product Type"...

    Choose the appropriate product type.

Try adding a couple of products... see if it meets your needs.

This will permanently set the add to cart ability of the category, which is not what the previous poster wants.

Gallery Category can be easily altered to show prices, by following commented instructions in /includes/templates/your_template/templates/tpl_product_info_display.php to delete two lines of code. Similar instructions are in /includes/modules/your_template/product_listing.php.

Note: product_listing.php in the mod is the v1.3.7 version of the file, and needs to be updated to the v1.3.8 version to function (there is no change in this file for v1.3.9).
The original mod is also not PHP5.3 compatible.
The fixes for these are simple, and I will release an updated version of the mod when I have time.
