Always display category images on main page not working

I have the settings as this

Admin -> Configuration -> Layout Settings -> Categories - Always show on main page - Set to 1 (on).

But the images aren't showing on the main page...

I've read this thread and tried everything mentioned, but still nothing is showing, any ideas what's wrong anybody?

Configuration > Product Listing > Show SubCategories on Main Page while navigating
Show Sub-Categories on Main Page while navigating through Categories

Set to 1= on

I don't recall ever setting it to 0 though and they used to display fine, oh well... sorted now
