What determines a coupon's status?

Does anyone know what determines s coupon's status (as displayed on the Gift Certificates/Coupons > Coupon Admin page within the Zen Cart Admin)?

It's not possible to change the status (enabled/disabled) for coupons - as far as I'm aware and the expiry date seems to have no control over the status of a coupon.

Maybe this is a bug?

Let's say you have a Discount Coupon setup to Expire on January 13, 2010 ...

What this means is, the Discount Coupon status will read: Y

And the Discount Coupon will continue to work until 01-13-2010 0:00:00 which is Midnight January 13, 2010 ... as in 7 hours and 49 minutes from now ...

At Midnight, January 13, 2010 the Discount Coupon will stop working and the customer will be told the Discount Coupon has expired ...

In the Admin, however, you will still see the status of Y ...

The reason for this, is once the Status is changed to N, which is what happens if you Delete the Discount Coupon, the Discount Coupon cannot be edited ...

So, if you wanted to change the date to expire on January 14, 2010 with the Status of Y, you can still make this change ...

However, if the status were N, you could not make this change ...

If you Delete the Discount Coupon, the Status will be changed from Y to N and you will not see it in the regular display of the Discount Coupons ...

This is to prevent a duplicate Discount Coupon with the same redemption code from being created ...

But, if it is left at Status Y, the Discount Coupon could be edited for extending its use ...

working with the test site, I have activated my discount coupons module, created a discount coupon, setup restrictions by category and click allow on say, books. I then went to the test on line store site and clicked on the discount coupon hyperlink and the code is added to the box, look-up discount coupon.
In the next window it shows categories being blank. Should it not show the item from restrictions, books? When I put in the product category and list them they will appear as allowed on the product restrictions section but nothing ever shows on the category restrictions. Am I missing a step in the manual?
