odd symbols in category sidebox

In the category sidebox all but one top category is followed by one of those symbols that normally would tell me the database couldn't interpret it. However, the only thing in the database is the word itself - nothing extra. The sub categories and the selected categories are fine and one of the top categories. I looked at the CSS and see nothing that can make it do that. I've made sure the modules/sideboxes/categories.php and the template are the original ones.

I am totally buffaloed here folks - has anyone seen this before?

Whatever that symbol is, it represents the subcategory marker (category has subcats). The one that doesn't have the symbol also doesn't have subcats.

Check Configuration > Layout Settings > Categories Separator between the Category Name and Count.


I note that IE6 just ignores the symbol completely - it doesn't even show in view source.

AHA! the category was entered into I think the layout config of the showing of the category count! Fixed!
