Is there a way to automatically switch the currency when you switch language. For instance, my default language is english/us dollars. When a site visitor switches to spanish, I want the currency to simultaneously switch to euros.

Yes. Two steps required:
1. Edit your /includes/languages/spanish.php file and set the define for LANGUAGE_CURRENCY to 'EUR'
2. Go to Admin->Configuration->My Store->Switch To Default Language Currency and set it to true..
