Limiting the number of category tabs on the top menu

Hi, I hope someone can help or point me in the right direction on this one. At present I have about 10 categories on my side menu which is fine. Unfortunately all of these are duplicated along the top menu tabs. Is it possible to turn some of these off, so they only show in the side menu? - Ideally I'd have maybe 5 categories along the horizontal top menu. Also I'd like to be able to choose which ones.

I'm using Zen Cart 1.3.8a

I assume that you have the default css cat tabs horizontally - -
This code displays ALL the cats just as the side box does
To be able to select you would need to custom code a menu bar for it

To disable the defaults
admin > config > layout settings > Categories-Tabs Menu ON/OFF > set to "0"

I can now choose which links show in the top categories section
