Send Mail page does not load

Greeting everybody,

I'm new to the forum and new to the Zen Cart also. I'm struggling to open the "Send Mail" page at the admin: it loads for a minute or so then gives me "An internal server error occurred. Please try again later.".

Same is happening with gv_mail.php. I don't quite know what is happening. It seems that the problem is at the e-mails table - BTW, I can access it easily with PHP MyAdmin.

As a side note: the database stop working after the load. It gives me an error like:

0 DB_ERROR_NOT_CONNECTED
in:
[select * from zen_project_version WHERE project_version_key = 'Zen-Cart Database' ]
If you were entering information, press the BACK button in your browser and re-check the information you had entered to be sure you left no blank fields.

For anyone who is experiencing the same problem, I found a workaround here:

But I still would like to know if there is a more "elegant" solution.
