help question Can I use one SSL for several websites?

    Hello Buddies,

Do you have several sites? If so, does that mean you need purchase the same amount of SSL certificates? One SSL for one site?

If my sites are hosted on the same server, can I just purchase one SSL certificate and make it available for all sites while checkout or admin?

And the last question is how

Seems I posted a lot of questions here

    Any idea is appreciated.

    Thanks.

SSL certificates are issued according to your DOMAIN NAME - not the server on which they reside. This is even true of SHARED SSL, where the DOMAIN is the owner of the cert.

Multi domain certificates are available covering all domains on a server, but they're intended for large corporates and tend to be expensive.

However, more recently GoDaddy have launched an affordable multi domain certificate that basically works by having one domain as the primary and the others added as notes.

So if the certificate is inspected, it will show the details of the primary domain, but it will provide SSL encryption for each domain listed.

Indeed for Linux-based hosting accounts restricted to a single IP address, this is often the only way to provide SSL to multiple domains.

You need to ensure that your sites are secure and provide your customers a secure platform in which to enter their details etc.

My Moto is one site one SSL for the domain.

The paying customers now days are very wise and know what to look for when purchasing goods online.
You also need to purchase a dedicated IP address when installing an SSL as well.

Most hosting platforms will provide you with hosting space that includes the ability to host multiple domains.

Ok so your host gave you a dedicated ip address. You buy an SSL certificate great everything installed fine and works.

Now, you probably want to add a second or third website. Well on a shared host 1 dedicated ip is all you can get. You can only install 1 certificate per dedicated ip address.

To run multiple stores in SSL with 1 dedicated ip address under multiple domains, you now need to upgrade your SSL certificate to what is called a UCC Certificate. This allows multiple domains to be listed under 1 certificate.

note: do not confuse UCC with Wildcard...these are different animals

As stated above, godaddy offers this UCC as well as many other companies. They can do as little as 5 websites and upwards of 100 or more.

So this will be an option for quite a few people and for install instructions contact the vendor that you purchased from.

    Hope this helps.

I bought a UCC SSL from GoDaddy under the main domain shanestoys.com. ShanesToys works fine and the store is in the root directory ( / ) at GoDaddy Hosting. I added a second store at /vitamins and pointed NutritionalHealthSupply.com to it. I added that domain to the UCC SSL. I changed the config files to https://www.nutritionalhealthsupply.com and enabled SSL.

Shanestoys.com shows up as being secure and nutritionalhealthsupply.com does not.

    Any suggestions?

Looks to me like you set the cert to secure nutritionalhealthsupply.com but the site to be www.nutritionalhealthsupply.com. To an SSL cert these are completely different.

    kuroi is correct,

you may want to call godaddy for some assistance since you are hosted with them and bought that cert there, they will be able to provide you with a new CRT and put that in for you.

I removed the www. from my config files and it works fine now. Thank you.

I almost always use www. in almost everything I do. The UCC SSL I have is for only 5 domains. Is there any reason to also do www.nutritionalhealthsupply.com on the certificate and have both of them work?

No, for Zen Cart it is one or the other as the config files will revert the domain to the proper one upon secure mode.
