The specific problem described in this thread is fixed in 1.3.9c

There is also a separate problem that has the same error message. It happens when custom templates are used on a site that has been upgraded. The custom templates need changes.

Test for it by changing to the default tempalte. If that works then search the knowledge base or the forum for it. It's around somewhere.
