It asks the main Zen Cart server to inquire what the latest version is, and compares that with what you have and tells you if they're different.

I was just talking to my business partner (and fellow zenner!) about their being a new Zen Cart released earlier and happened to login to my admin and top right their was a message saying about a new update was available... I just wondered how that convenient message worked, that is all

I assume that this exchange between my server and the zen cart server is safe and doesn't contain any sensitive data i.e admin address etc.? p.s the reason I'm asking this question is not because I don't trust zen cart, but due to a recent hacking I'm very security concious (borderline paranoid lol) about that sort of thing.

If you want it to quit checking, in admin/includes/local/skip_version_check.ini

admin_configure_php_check=on

Change the version_check=on to off. Also, you can inspect the code in admin/includes/header.php, it starts at line 125.

An easier way of turning it off would be to go to your admin page, My Store and change this to False

Show if version update available
Automatically check to see if a new version of Zen Cart is available. Enabling this can sometimes slow down the loading of Admin pages.

The checking does not directly send any identifiable information. It only asks for what the latest version is. There is no sending involved.
It's intentionally designed to preserve your privacy.
