404 error on admin screen

I have the local version of my shop running 1.3.8. I'm trying to use that the transition to the latest version. I can login to the local shop with no problems, but when I try to get into the admin screen I get a 404 error. I can't figure out what I've done some looking for help.

Any suggestions?

Do you mean once you put your credentials into the admin login area? Then you get a 404 after hitting submit?

Nope. I can log in to my store at www.fernslist.com/UK with no trouble, but when I try to access www.fernslist.com/UK/admin I get a 404 error.

Are you sure the admin folder is really there and you haven't renamed it? If it's there, check the server permissions on it.

Yes, it's there, and the access rights seem normal for a directory/folder. The 404 error is actually happening on the index.php file which is also there and available. I've put this one on ice for the time being. When it comes round to it I'll have to find another way of doing my upgrade, I think.
