How do I permanently move a product to a different category?

Running ZC 1.3.9f. I currently have a category that has multiple products

cat_1 -> prod_1, prod_2

and I need to split that category into two sub-categories with the products split between them

cat_1 -> cat_1_1 -> prod_1
cat_1 -> cat_1_2 -> prod_2

Is there a way to do this so that anyone who's bookmarked "cat_1->prod_1" gets redirected to "cat_1->cat_1_1->prod_1"?

For making the subcats, you will need to temporarily move all of the products into another category, then move them into the subcats after you create them.

For the redirect, you need a 301 redirect for each specific original product address. This might best be done with an .htaccess file; search the forum and the web for more info.
