Default Test Site on Live Domain

    Hi

In order to test paypal IPN and Google Checkout, I'm going to need to have a 'dev install' on my Linux webserver.

I think the simplest method would simply be to create a new /devshop folder in my www location.

At present my live install sits in /shop off www.

Looks like I can have subdomains on my webspace, but I think that may cause issues if I do SSL testing.

Is there a really simply way I can prevent people snooping around a /devshop folder? I assume cpanel or /htaccess could be used to restrict this folder to my static IP?

But then, Paypal IPN may not be able to pass messages back.

    Thanks

    Al

    1. Don't use IPN. Use Express Checkout instead. Then you don't have to rely on a background postback to release your PayPal orders.
    2. As for keeping people out of your devshop folder ... don't advertise it.
You're right: .htaccess protection will block all incoming traffic.

And, you can test PayPal on your live site by simply enabling it and doing a transaction. Nothing special to install. Just configure according to the instructions, and do a transaction. Refund it when done, if necessary. You'll need a 2nd PayPal account (yours or get someone else to do the buying).

But for an extensive addon like GC, you'll definitely want to do lots of testing first.

    Thanks Doctor.

You have just saved me a lot of time reference using Paypal Express over Standard.

For some reason, previously I thought only people who paid for Paypal Pro could use express.

    Kind Regards
    Al
