Free shipping for products, not their attributes

I have a store which needs to sell three products to both US and Canadian customers. All three products have an optional attribute tied to them.

For US Customers, we want them to get free shipping on the main product, but not the attribute.

For Canadian customers, we want them to pay the shipping on the main product and the attribute.

When we are trying the Free Shipping module and set the attribute for "Attribute is Free When Product is Free:" to no.

When we do this, Canadian customers are unable to purchase our products and US customers get everything free, including the attributes.

Is there a workaround or contribution for this?

Hi, i will try to help as i think i might know some of this.
If you set the weight of the main product you want to ship free to, "0" and the attribute attached to this product to, + ? (?= the weight of the product), and set your shipping module to " free when weight is zero " that should work.
You'd have to free shipping set for the US zone , only.
All this assumes that you are shipping by weight?

US customers get everything free, including the attributes.
Only if the price is "0".

I'm dealing with this exact situation.
Soul39, you did a great job explaining how to get US customers the product for free, but what happens if the customer is in Canada?

The weight is zero? That will not allow shipping by weight to Canada.

I gotta tell you. I'm very frustrated with the free shipping module. Especially, if you have different zones.

the funny thing is that when we were only try to sell in US, I used the zero weight as a work-around.

But now I need to use the free shipping module accurately and I can't get it to work.

(1) US Customers get free shipping on product, not attribute (which is connected to product)
(2) International Customers pay for shipping by weight.

All shipping is by weight on my website.

Any suggestions? THANK YOU for your help.
