How can I display the number of items in shopping cart in header

Hi, not sure where to find or add information where I can display X number of items when users add items to their shopping cart.
Eg when user adds 2 items to shopping cart, the header will show

(2) items in your shopping bag.

When there is 0 it will show (0) item in your shopping bag.

Because right now the default is whereby you don't add anything to your cart, the shopping cart link wouldn't show up.

You might look in the free software addons for a 3rd party addon named Alternative Header 1.1a and there might be others to your liking
