Can I install 1.3.8 with updates instead of 1.3.9?

I bought a template for our new store, but it states that it can only be used with version 1.3.8. Can I install all the updates to 1.3.8 and still gain the functionality of 1.3.9, while keeping the template in working order?

Should I be concerned with hacking or store security doing it this way?

Basic answer is NO

You actually do not want to risk being hacked as that is what the new release addresses
But I would try the template and what ever files it comes with just compare to the new versions and if there is a new version merge the templates alterations into the new file
