Tax Description not displayed, 'plus' prefix required

(In advance, apologies: this seems an extremely basic question but hours of searching haven't resolved it)

Am running ZC with tax only added and displayed at the checkout stage. I want all (net) prices to be suffixed with 'plus VAT' (or some other way of reminding customers that they're looking at the net price by displaying the Tax Description.

Obviously, I can't simply add this as trailing text in 'admin/locations-taxes/tax description' since it will display that text in the sum (gross) total too, at the checkout stage.

What's the blindingly obvious solution that I'm missing here?
