Is a SSL cert required to make the cart take credit cards through linkpoint?
Yes.
And, an SSL cert SHOULD BE A BIG CONSIDERATION since your site is collecting personal information from customers. Choosing to not use SSL on your site is simply telling your customers you don't care if their personal information is stolen by passers-by while your customers are shopping on your site.
SSL certs protect way more than just credit card information.
