The Sub-categories that I'm trying to offer free shipping on do not contain any linked products.

Perhaps that's the problem. I'm dealing with Sub-Categories.
I don't want to apply free shipping to a category, rather to a selct few sub categories.

Does that make sense?

1 what do you see in the URL for the cPath=

2 Change the Always Free Shipping to YES on 1 of the Products, does it work for Free Shipping?

I can manually change a product within the subcategory to Free Shipping and it shows in my cart correctly.

cPath=

in the URL and what do you see listed as the:
Product Master Category:

If you look in phpMyAdmin at the products table for products_id 76575 does it have for the master_categories_id 577 ...
