coupon calculated after shipping

I have free shipping set up for $50 and above. I can't get the coupon to come up after the shipping so that if they use a coupon and the total goes below $50, they have to pay shipping.
here are my order totals:

Hi there - yes, we have the same problem.

- customers get free shipping if they spend over £35
- customer buys goods at £35 +
- customer selects free shipping
- customer adds coupon and their order becomes worth less than £35 so they should now be paying for shipping, which encoirages them to spend mopre until their order with the discount applied comes to more than £35

But this doesn't happen and they still get free shipping - hence discount and free shipping, double whammy.

We're using 1.3.9h and were hoping this issue would be solved. Can anyone help please? I thought one way of solving this might be to take the card details and the discount xcoupon in step one of checkout, then do the shipping options in step two, but hey I'm npot sure that would work even if I knew how to switch them around.

Nothing is built in to do this; you have to write code.
