Help setting up Zones please

I'm like a lot of the other posters. I have been reading threads, manuals, and trying things for days and can't seem to get a very simple (I think) setup working. Here is what I need.

I want to sell in the US only (50 states), and charge sales tax in my state only (California).

I could tell you what I've done, but it probably all needs to be deleted and redone correctly. I wait with anxious for any help.

First create a Zone Definition for California Tax and in the Details set the Country to United States and the Zone to California ...

Next add a new Tax Rate for California and add your Zone for California Tax ...

NOTE: make sure you do not have other Tax Rates setup, such as the default Florida Tax ...

Then, create a Zone Definition for US Only and add the 50 States plus DC ...

This Zone you would add to your Shipping modules so that only shipping to the places you have in your US Only one Definition can ship ...

This allows Grandma in the UK to buy Tiny Tim in New York a new crutch for Christmas ...

Post #8 will help you build a quick US 48 States ... you can then edit that and add Alaska and Hawaii to it and change the Zone Definition name to something like US 50 States plus DC ...

Thank you. I have not tried it yet, but this is making sense now. However, this is the only time that I had hoped that no one had responded yet :-)

The reason is because I posted this and then went out for dinner. While out, I realized that I had forgotten one additional detail that I need to do that I just learned about yesterday from my state sales tax board. I'm really sorry if this changes everything.

Everything above remains the same. But in addition, I need to break the sales tax for California (CA) into two zones. I need to charge one rate for the county that I am in, and a different rate for the rest of the state.

I am guessing that this step might be a little more work since there are no CA counties setup in Zen, and no way for the customer to be forced to choose their county even if I added them. I am thinking that maybe the way I will need to do this is to enter the 12 cities that are in my county which will let Zen apply my county tax to each of those 12 cities. Then is there a way to apply a different tax to the rest of the state? Or maybe another solution?

I started to set up your first answer. But when I came to the adding the SQL stuff I see that there is a big warning in the SQL Executor to backup the data base first. I will need to research this because I have no idea how to do it. Would it be easier for me to just get busy and enter the 50 states myself?

Well I still don't seem to even be able to set up the first thing you say to do- the California tax zone. I have set up every window that I can find, and the CA zone has a red dot. What am I doing wrong? I have pasted below every setting that I can find that has to do with this zone.

Go to the where you see the Red dot ... and click on DETAILS ...

Click on Insert ...

Select the Country: United States

Select the Zone: California
