Default Optional Container Charges for Liquid Products Sold by the Pound

We sell liquid ingredients (like honey) by the pound. We use containers that can hold up to 12 pounds of ingredients. We need to be able to allow customers who order these ingredients to optionally add a charge for the containers as follows:

0 buckets - none required...local customer bringing own container
    1 bucket - 1-12 lbs of product: $2.50
    2 buckets - 13-24 lbs: $5.00
    3 buckets - 25-36 lbs: $7.50
    ...

The way we tried to set up attribures, it charged the bucket charge for each lb of product, which is obviouly not the way to go.

We've searched for a way to do this and come up with bupkiss.

    Anyone?

We're using 1.3.9h with FedEx shipping add-ons and the SophyBlue template.

Please ship my honey BEFORE Buford comes in with that gallon bucket he had fishing worms in last week.
I can see a few ways without the customer supplied container, but adding that really throws a monkey wrench in the mix.
Simply adding Option Values with dropdowns will allow the addition of fees for various levels (numbers of containers).
Option values 1-12 have no added cost while 13-24 would have the cost of the additional bucket. Only you can tell if a customer might make two honey orders with one cart. That's the only case (I can think of) where it might get "sticky".

Barley, Flaked -- "Sold by the pound. Minimum order 0.1 lb." The min and units are both set to 0.1 as well.

Since the buckets are optionally, the solution seems pretty simple to me (given the information you gave)

You make one option with a dropdown. in that dropdown menu you put 4 attributes

0 buckets - none required...local customer bringing own container
    1 bucket - 1-12 lbs of product: $2.50
    2 buckets - 13-24 lbs: $5.00
    3 buckets - 25-36 lbs: $7.50

these options are all given a one time charge

I think that might make the number of buckets depend on the amount of honey ordered and that is not available currently.
The customer could order 30 lbs of honey and one bucket.

You could also make a new product called bucket
install a cross sell addon and let the customer choose how many buckets he wants
