And the PayPal change did not correct the problem- our new orders this morning still resulted in the same problem: no items ordered notifice. The Order is not finishing in the Customers-Orders.
Then clearly something's interrupting the normal completion of the order processing.
In Zen Cart 1.3.9 any PHP errors encountered during execution are logged in /cache/myDebug-xxxxx.log files. You need to access those files to determine what specific errors are occurring. I mentioned that previously: http://tutorials.zen-cart.com/index.php?article=82
If that's not adequate, then you'll need to sort out what files are different from the working version of the files in the original Zen Cart code:

Here now I think I have us a clue ( a phrase from some old song- may be appropriate, though): I checked with authorize.net after I entered a transaction through the virtual terminal. This sale DID show the items purchased "Description". Our other sales through the webstore show "Website Purchase from Montana Bentonite" in this place.
I vaguely remember that I did enter this statement in our setup. Now I just have to find out where this is and change it back to whatever the default language was! I have to look for ORDER INFORMATION and DESCRIPTION and get this changed back.

Yes, I did go through this procedure in setting up our Authorize process. I've saved this and will review to check. I still think that I've wrongly changed the products order message and am going to go searching for where I did this.
