Your host probably doesn't like having files or folders set to 777 permissions. Use 755 instead. Contact your hosting company for more specific help, since the server itself has a log that will tell them exactly why the 500 error is appearing.

Possibly even 644 - I have seen hosts that require this.
You can generally change these settings using your ftp program - look for a "permissions" button or something like that.

If your hosting is running suPHP files with less than 644 will throw server 500 errors.
