Default Upgrading database to new directory.

    Hi,

I am getting all my information and stuff together ready for an upgrade of 1.3.8a to 1.3.9h.

    I have two one questions:

Firstly, on the upgrade guide it states that you should "Upload the files from your modified "new version" (created in step 2) to your server, into an alternate folder, perhaps called "/store_new"."

I currently have my shop situated in the directory "shop". If I were to install the "new" files into my upmost directory and then run the upgrade, would my shop now be situated in www.myshop.com as apposed to www.myshop.com/shop? Or do I have to upload the "new" files into a different directory.

Secondly, as stupid as this may sound, once the new store database and files have all been uploaded and upgraded correctly, I assume it is fine to completely delete all of the old files via ftp?

Thank you in advance for any help.

What you want to do is create a new directory on your server called shop_new for example and upload the new zen cart there... then you make all the changes you need on that shop (accessible through www.yourdomain.tld/shop_new/).

Once you are done with that you could either go and move your old store from the directory store to a new directory store_old en then move your files from directory shop_new to directory store then do the fix_cache_key (search for it in the free software add on section) and you are good to go... or change the link to your store from www.yourdomain.tld/store to www.yourdomain.tld/shop_new

Thanks for the reply. That makes sense. If I wanted the new store not situated in a directory but on the highest directory i.e. www.mydomain.com as apposed to www.mydomain.com/store can I do that? Also why would you leave the old store files on the server out of interest?

you could move the files from store_new to the root. That is what most of us do. :)

I mostly keep the old files just for reference and delete them after it is sure that the new shop runs perfectly. (you never know where there might be a corrupt file or something and with the old files still on the server you can quickly have the old shop up and running)

Brilliant, what i shall do then is upload the new store files to the root, and ill make a back up of the old files and remove once upgrade is complete. Will i still have to run the fix_cache_key add on? Not entirely sure what it does.

    Thank you.

Yes you still need to that and alter both configure files to the new situation.
