Can Subcategories be visible on main page?

I've gone to the FAQs but cannot find the answer. If so, please tell me how/where to configure the subcategories to be viewed on the main page.

I know that they are viewed when a main category is clicked, I would like for them to stay ON all the time....all of them...even if a customer is not in that area/category.

Are you talking about the categories sidebox? If so, what you want is an expanded categories mod. There are several in Free Addons that will do it, though some are better than others. My favorite is Uncollapsed Categories Tree, available from its author's (fragfutter) site (search the forum for his thread). It is also available bundled as a separate package in Categories Dressing in Free Addons.
